Roxy The Lost Dog

Roxy 2.jpgA Happy Ending Update:  We got a call from Roxy's people this afternoon after they saw our "found" poster at Wilco.  She has gone home to her family who is very happy to have her back safe and sound!!

Yesterday evening Philip and Max walked to the Gamestop down the street to resell a video game and get a new one.  On their way home they encountered this girl.  Roxy.  Who was wandering around, with no one near and apparently she followed Philip and Max.  So they  brought her home.  When home Philip called the number on her dog tag only to hear a message on the owners machine that said "This number is not accepting calls at this time."

Roxy and chick 2.jpgAside from the total arrogance of a machine telling you it's "not taking calls at this time" like some A-lister Hollywood actor who assumes that at this point anyone calling is nothing more than a barnacle anyway...but if you lost your dog, and your dog was wearing your number so people could find you...wouldn't you be "accepting" calls?  If your phone was full, wouldn't you empty it so anyone finding your dog could get in touch with you?

black and tan 2.jpgPhilip suggested I was just being a jerk and that maybe Roxy's people are on vacation.  Some people don't take calls when they're trying to relax.  Okay, okay- I think that's a possibility.  Especially because all clues point towards this dog being loved.  Matt and Jen, her people, have given her her shots, she had just had a bath (I could smell the fancy dog shampoo on her), and her coat was in great shape.  Plus she's a wee bit portly, which suggests that she's been well fed.

nosing 2.jpgFurthermore, her temperament is sweet and well adjusted.  Her people have been good to her and it seems that she has simply managed to wander to far from home.  Philip thinks the dog is probably being dog sat by friends of the owners.  We tried calling their number several times.  I then called the Police dispatch (the only officials open past 5pm in this sleepy town) to give Roxy's information and ask what I should do with her.  Keep her until animal control opens on Saturday, dispatch told me.  Or let her wander.  Up to me.

WHAT?!

Well, what else can you do if the owners don't take calls and you walk the dog all around the area where you found her wandering in the first place and she doesn't seem to recognize home and no one is out calling for her?  I left a message with the Animal Control people.  But by now it was already past 7pm and we had a stray dog spending the night with us.  Maybe if she was mean and chased the cats or freaked the hell out over the chickens it would have been another story.  But this dog is SWEET.

I have just called her people's number again.  They are still not taking calls.  Philip and I already agreed that this girl is not going to the pound, no matter what.  I am going to go call Animal Control to see if they can give us the address of Roxy's people or if they can go themselves to knock and notify that we have her.  We won't be giving her up to the dog catchers though.  If her people left for vacation, putting her in the care of friends, we won't be likely to find out who they are.  If we let Roxy go to the pound to await claiming by her people, then they'll have to pay money to get her back, Philip says.

If we were in their place we'd be really bummed.  But the main thing is to not let this old dog get jailed.  So we'll do everything we can to get her back to her people, without letting her be put away and scared.

And if we don't ever find them?  Then she'll have to pitch her fortunes with us.  Because we already think she's a pretty awesome dog.

Here's what we know about her:

Her name is Roxy.  Her people are Matt and Jen.  She has the eyes of a pug, the nose of a boxer, and the body of a pit.  She's probably some kind of mix.  She's tan with white on her barrel chest and on her paws.  She's got very long nails.  She's been well fed and cared for.  She has her rabies shots.  She's had puppies at some point.  She has lots of grey around her muzzle.  She seems to have difficulty going up and down stairs.  Her tail is docked.*  She can't get up on the beds (this is good, actually, or Chick would be terribly jealous).  She doesn't bark much.  She really couldn't care less if a parade of cats walks by.  We think she might be kind of old.  She is not aggressive or dominant or whiny or uptight.  She's mellow and sweet and though she does seem a little worried (what lost dog wouldn't be?) she settled right down for the night.

Now, onto the business at hand.  Wish Roxy luck!

I hope we find her people though because we really don't need another dog right now, especially since our own life situation is full of questions and should we have to find a rental at any time, two dogs are much harder and more expensive to house than one.

*By the way, I think tail docking is evil.  I've said it before and my opinion continues strongly.  A tail is expressive and when you reduce it to just a stump it's like cutting off an Italian person's arms- no more expressive gesticulating.  Now, if a dog is born without a tail, this is another matter.  What can you do about nature not providing you with your own conversational baton?

Helen:

Can you look up the # in a reverse directory? If you put in the # you'd get their address if it is not a cell # or unlisted. Good luck!

Philip tried that! But maybe I should give it a go myself. It's worth a second shot.

Darlene Bratcher:

I really enjoy reading your blog - got your info from Facebook and Mt. Warrior Kung Fu Academy (I'm a former member). About Roxy - I know a Matt and Jen (Behnke) - I don't have their address. I know they both work and are musicians. They will be performing Sunday, May 23rd at the Peace Through Music festival at the Grand Ballroom. I don't know them well or even if they have a dog, but what's the odds there are more than one 'Matt and Jenn' in Mac. Matt's dad lives in Mac - not sure of his name, but there's an Elwin at 503-472-1011 on 3-Mile Lane. It's worth a try. Good luck. If you want, I can ask them tomorrow. Thanks. Hi Darlene- thank you so much for trying to help- I didn't catch your message until today. Sorry about that! Roxy's people actually saw our poster of Roxy and called us up today so she's been reunited with her family- we're sooooo happy she got to go home. Though she's a sweetie and we were totally prepared to take her in, we really don't need another dog right now. So it worked out for the best.
