The Otis Cafe and Kenneling Children
Our friend Jim M. suggested we stop at the Otis Cafe and so we did. We needed plenty of sustenance for what would turn out to be 16 hours on the road. We took Highway 101 to California instead of the usual Highway 5 route. The Otis Cafe gives a good breakfast. It might actually be the only thing in Otis.
Fun in the parking lot- such a temptation! I've always said that dogs are like kids, I think kids are like dogs too.
I promise it was his idea! But oh....how much easier if kids could be contained in little boxes.
This was a lovely spot along the coast off of 101 where we all stretched our legs and walked the path around the lookout. After all the high temperatures of the previous weeks it was a tremendous relief to have a very cool comfortable drive all the way to California until 101 left the coast.
Max reunited with his friend Sam who he's known his whole life. They are only 4 months apart in age.
The drive to California was really long. Longer than usual. I was ready to have Philip drop me off in Coos Bay and walk the rest of the way cause I was pretty sure I could have a great time in Coos Bay by myself. Max was pretty darn good. For all kids there comes a point where another fifteen minutes in the car is torturous boring, this point usually comes four times faster for our kid than the average kid. This trip was about 14 hours too long for Max but he didn't become a real pill until about the 12th hour where it seemed that every time he asked how long it was going to take to get there we told him "One more hour" and the hours just piled and piled and piled....
Max has been having a blast with Sam and his other close friend Joschka. There have been shockingly few squabbles.

I am enjoying seeing my old friends and seeing familiar places and landscapes. It is amazing how different the California landscape is from Oregon. It is so dry and brown here. It's beautiful but I don't miss it much. I think the lush green growth of Oregon is prettier and I don't feel so thirsty all the time.
Biggest olfactory difference between California and Oregon is that the California summer smells like sun-parched sage and Oregon smells like warm ripe blackberries.
I can absolutely say with confidence that Californians generally have more and whiter teeth than Oregonians.
There are also about 75% fewer pickup trucks on the roads here.
There are almost as many muffin tops, tight pants, and bad haircuts in California as there are in Oregon.
Beer is more expensive with fewer good deals than we find in our town.
The gardens in Santa Rosa are much more interesting and generally prettier than the bulk of gardens in McMinnville. But then, the LAWN rules all in my town. You plan your garden around the lawn. Nothing else particularly matters. Add a little insignificant kidney shaped bed for annuals somewhere random in the lawn and you're set!
It's time to rejoin my hosts as this is the last night we're spending at my friend Chelsea's house. Next we stay at our friend Sid and Denis' house.
Hope you're all having a great week!

I just want you to know I have given you this award because I think you deserve it. To me it isn't about keeping the meme going it is about truly acknowledging people who write things that speak to me. It is yours, please do with it as you will.
Kind Regards
Belinda

Looks like a wonderful time...I will keep the dog kennel in mind whenever this baby decides to arrive. Thanks for sharing, I felt like I just got a mini vacation vicariously through you.
By the way, I would have started complaining WAY before the 12th hour on the road.
