Favorite Things: Wool Flower Pin

rhinestone 2.jpgThis pretty wool and rhinestone broach was given to me by my friend Lucille who has impeccable style.  I used to wear it on my coat quite often.  Now I don't wear anything pretty, ever.  I have had most of my pretty jewelry packed away in my hat boxes and in a few random other boxes stashed away in dark closets.  The other night I rediscovered them all and spent an entire evening enjoying all my baubles.  Most of my jewelry has no intrinsic value.  I tend to collect costume jewelry, funny vintage pieces, and crafty pretty pins.

striped flower 2.jpgI love Lucille's style.  She's one of those people who always discovers trends before they become mainstream.  Though I was wearing and collecting old aprons before most of the craft world cottoned on to the trend, Lucille was doing it long before me.  One of my other favorite things is the cutest pink tulle vintage apron she gave me.  I'll have to photograph that one another time.

This pin brings together three things I have a weakness for: stripes, rhinestones, and flowers.  Make that four: wool is one of my all time favorite fibers.

I've moved many of my small treasures into my china hutch in my bedroom which I use as my dresser because we got rid of our loved bedroom set when we lived in the last house and it wouldn't fit through our hallway.  Since we happen to have a deco dining room set that we didn't need in the dining room we just put it in the bedroom. It works.  The real bonus is that I can lay out pretty things in the top part behind glass so they look particularly enjoyed and appreciated.

In between my wonderful weekend, which ended on an unfortunate sour note, and moving forward with a new week during which I must learn a completely new way to eat for the next month, I thought I should get back to the favorite things series to remind myself of the small pleasures that fill the gaps between all the drama and chagrin and troubles that seem to follow us around these days.

I have lots of pretty things and I intend to look at them a lot more often.  I might even wear them.  You know how I was planning on making a cape a long time ago?  I think I might still do it.  A large lady cape.  One that can show off pretty pins like this one.  There is no garment on earth that I can wear that will flatter me but there is merit in wearing colors I actually love and adorning myself with pretty things that remind me of good friends and family treasures.
